Getting ready to bring some extra spring colour to Derker

30/10/2022

Our Neighbourhood Care team is getting ready to bring some extra spring colour to Derker next year, by planting thousands of flower bulbs in the neighbourhood.

You may have seen our groundwork contractor busy at work planting up almost 2000m2 of green space at Whetstone Hill Road.

2000m2 of green space at Whetstone Hill Road has been planted up with thousands of spring flower bulbs

While the plots might not look much right now, from March to July next year they will be transformed with swathes of beautiful daffodils, camassias and alliums for Derker residents and wildlife like bees and butterflies to enjoy. We can’t wait to see the areas bloom.

This autumn we have used machine planting to help us achieve the best display of flowers and brighten up the area in the spring and summer.

To help make neighbourhoods greener and more attractive we are looking to roll out similar bulb planting to other areas in future years.

If you would like to nominate an FCHP-owned area that would benefit from this, please get in touch by emailing servicecentre@fcho.co.uk or calling 0161 393 7117 and our team will look into it.

Neighbourhood Care and sustainability

The bulb planting in Derker builds upon our Neighbourhood Care team’s good work to reduce its environmental impact while improving green spaces.

At the start of this year’s grass cutting season in March, the team launched new nature friendly zones at ten sites across Oldham where grass was left to grow and improve natural habitat for wildlife until the end of the cutting season in October.

The team has also planted plots in neighbourhoods across the borough with ‘bee bombs’ and a selection of wildflower seeds to create our own areas for flowering plants to grow and help boost biodiversity.

By making these changes we want to make neighbourhoods even greater, more sustainable places for residents to live and help wildlife like bees and other insects to flourish and thrive.
