Environmental improvement work in the West St neighbourhood takes next steps

13/10/2022

Our investment team has invested £50k in its first major clean-up of the West St neighbourhood, as part of regeneration work in the area.

We know how important it is for us to invest in existing homes and green spaces around them, alongside progressing our new build West Vale development.

Over the next five years we are investing a minimum of £3.35m to boost the energy efficiency of local homes and carry out a range of environmental improvements to ensure our customers have a great, sustainable neighbourhood to live in.

During August and September this year, the team from our contractor Casey has been hard at work clearing alleyways of rubbish and removing fly tipping, repairing and repainting fencing, and bringing a disused communal garden behind Vale Drive up to a standard so that it is safe and can be maintained by our Neighbourhood Care team.

And here’s a snapshot of the difference they have made for local people!

During August and September 2022, the team from FCHO's contractor Casey has been hard at work clearing alleyways of rubbish and removing fly tipping, repairing and repainting fencing, and bringing a disused communal garden behind Vale Drive up to a standard so that it is safe and can be maintained by FCHO's Neighbourhood Care team.

This is the second phase of environmental improvement work carried out in the area this year.

In the spring our Neighbourhood Care team inspected 101 trees across the neighbourhood and planned necessary work. They also planted 15 new trees to replace those that will be removed during work to build new homes at our West Vale development. Read more here.

David Wrigley our Head of Neighbourhood Care said: “We want to provide a great neighbourhood and we are carrying out a schedule of work to help make it more attractive for local people and deliver other benefits like boosting biodiversity and creating spaces for the local community to use and enjoy.

“Dumped rubbish and fly tipping are persistent problems in the area, which customers have told us they want us to tackle and it’s in our Neighbourhood Plan to do this.  Now this large scale clean-up is complete, we want local people to work with us and take pride in the area to keep it neat and tidy.

“These latest improvements are part of our wider plan to regenerate the existing neighbourhood to provide homes we are proud of and improve lives. We are looking at a range of factors such as ways to cut the energy consumption and carbon emissions of homes to help customers save energy and money, to waste management and more. There is a lot of work in the pipeline so look out for more news coming soon.”
