Environmental improvement work in the West St/Vale Drive neighbourhood is moving forward

15/02/2022

Our improvement programme in the West St/Vale Drive neighbourhood is underway, starting with work on green spaces.

Our Neighbourhood Care team is investing £9.5k this financial year on:

Surveying trees in the area.

Earlier this year our team inspected 101 trees across the neighbourhood, noting any potential health and safety risks to customers and members of the public, scheduling tree management work where needed on 45 trees and identifying three trees to be removed because they are dead, diseased or dying.

Planting 15 new trees in the area to enhance the neighbourhood.

These new trees are to replace those that will be removed during work to build new homes at our West Vale development.

David Wrigley, our Head of Neighbourhood Care says: "Through engagement work and our customer survey, local people have told us they want us to improve the local area as well as progressing the new build West Vale scheme.

"Tree management has been identified as being important to residents. The results of our tree survey have helped us better understand our tree stock in the area, plan improvement work where it’s needed and select the best places to plant new trees to enhance the landscape.

"Trees are extremely valuable assets so in line with our tree policy, we don’t remove trees unless they are dead, diseased or dying, or in immediate danger of causing structural damage to properties. Instead, we work to improve our tree stock so people in the area can benefit from it now and in years to come."

The West St/Vale Drive environmental improvement programme is among our plans to make the neighbourhood more attractive for local people and boost environmental performance.

Over the coming months we are:

  • Repairing and repainting metal boundary fencing
  • Planting wildflower seeds and flower bulbs to encourage biodiversity.
  • Bringing the garden at the rear of Vale Drive back up to a standard so that it can be enjoyed by residents
