Community clean-up day comes to Shaw

Huge thanks to customers for turning out to support our community waste collection day in Shaw last month – held to give locals a hand to get rid of unwanted bulky household items.
The day was organised by our Neighbourhood Care and Neighbourhoods teams in partnership with Oldham Council and contractor, Connolly, which is currently delivering our investment programme to make 200 FCHO-owned homes more energy efficient and help cut customers’ gas and/or electric bills by up to a third.
Teams were out and about helping people to dispose of items like divan beds, mattresses, internal doors and general household waste in a free skip situated on Cowie Street. Colleagues also helped clear fly tipping, litter picked the surrounding streets and talked to residents about recycling and ways to dispose of rubbish – all things our customers have told us they want us to take action on.
David Wrigley, our Head of Neighbourhood Care said: “Most people take pride in where they live, but unfortunately a minority don’t and rubbish and fly tipping are persistent issues which we know have a negative effect on people and their area.
“Tackling this is in our Shaw and Crompton Neighbourhood Plan and the recent clean-up day is among the ways we’re working to make a positive difference to local people. Following our community waste collection day, we are asking customers to play their part and dispose of their waste carefully to keep the place neat and tidy.”
Our waste management strategy 2022-25
Our community waste collection days are among the actions in our waste management strategy 2022-25. To further clamp down on fly tipping in our neighbourhoods we’re also stepping up enforcement action against those who dump rubbish – issuing charges starting at £132 and ensuring the items are cleared, as well as carrying out community litter picks and improving bin facilities for communal blocks.
