What not to flush - prevent your drains from blocking

Recently we've been receiving loads of reports of blocked drains, but did you know, most blockages are preventable?

The most common reason our customers' drains are becoming blocked is:

  • Pouring fat down the sink or toilet

If you do this, when the fat cools, it congeals and will clog your pipes, regardless of if you've rinsed it down your sink or poured it down the toilet. In most cases, simply mopping it up with kitchen roll and then popping that in the bin works just fine, and your drains will thank you for it.

Other things you shouldn't flush include:

  • Nappies
  • Menstrual pads
  • Cotton make up pads
  • Hair
  • Plasters
  • Dental floss
  • Cigarette butts
  • Cat litter
  • Paper towels
  • Baby wipes

United Utilities has loads more information to help you #StopTheBlock, so check out their website for tips and advice.

We're also running a campaign on social media to help you understand what's safe to flush, and remind people of the top things that are guaranteed to clog your pipes, so head over to Facebook and Twitter to get involved. Why not share your top tips for keeping your drains clog-free in the comments?
