Loft clear out success to prepare customer homes for new insulation

22/12/2025

Customers who are due to receive new insulation were able to clear out their lofts recently, thanks to skips provided by Connolly ahead of work beginning.

The clean-up took place on the Abbey Hills and Roundthorn Road estate, where FCHO is delivering a major £6.1 million refurbishment programme across its homes.

As part of their social value commitments, contractor Connolly funded eight skips - a contribution worth £720 - to help customers dispose of unwanted items from their lofts. In total, three tonnes of waste were collected.

“This was a successful clear out of quite a few lofts ahead of our Wave III refit programme because it makes it easier for our contractor to get to work replacing or topping up insulation and improves the performance of loft insulation,” said Sustainability Manager Olivia Greenhalgh.

“Retrofitting and upgrading the loft insulation, installing triple glazed windows, insulated doors and solar panels are due to take place in many of these homes and others in Shaw and Chadderton during this wave.

“Customers will also be given smart heating controls to monitor and manage energy use more effectively in what is a major investment to ensure our existing properties can meet at least an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) C rating while crucially cutting bills for our customers.”

Our sustainability team were on hand to provide energy-saving advice and freebies, such as radiator heat reflectors.

In total, we are investing £31.4 million on the retrofit programmes -  to make all 11,500 homes warm, healthy, and energy efficient. This third wave of work started in Spring 2025.
