Alt Community Centre and café has a new spring in its step

Like many community centres, Alt Community Centre struggled during the pandemic and the months that followed. Four years on, the centre and its marvellous volunteers – aka ‘Friends of Alt’ – have a newfound spring in their step thanks to a combination of community spirit and support from FCHO.

Alt Community Centre, based on Cherry Avenue, Alt, is owned by FCHO but ran by a dedicated group of 10 volunteers who have all now received our in-house training to ensure the centre is running smoothly and efficiently. Our volunteer training includes aspects such as fire marshal, key-holder, and health and safety and we can also support volunteers to also carry out anything else relevant to the running of the centres, such as food hygiene and first aid courses.

The centre, which properly opened again in February 2024, has benefitted from a garden and grounds clear-out with further internal works set to be carried out, such as damp proofing, re-plastering of walls and re-painting.

As well as various sessions such as half term clubs, the centre also hosts an on-site café open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30 – 11.30am, ran by the volunteers, and has an upstairs space which has regular sessions every Wednesday evening 6pm – 8pm, (for ages 11 – 16), ran by Oldham Council’s youth service.

We’re also hoping to provide the centre with a number of laptops for local residents to use free of charge.

  • Wednesdays 9.30 – 11.30am
  • Fridays 9.30 – 11.30am

*Opening days and times may differ during national and school holiday periods.
