Volunteers are trained in their roles, which are complemented by our in-house training and extensive e-learning opportunities.
Below you can read about one of our volunteers, Mandy, and her experience working with FCHO.
Mandy found it very difficult to find employment. Being unemployed for ten years and now her family have grown up left home, Mandy had a skills gaps which made it harder for her to find employment.
This has had an effect on Mandy's confidence and she found herself becoming isolated and struggling with the lack of income.
She then began volunteering at FCHO helping customers in our Customer Zone with IT and supporting them when using the IT facilities and online services.
Mandy has seen a big change in her life since she became a volunteer,
"It has changed my life completely, living it to the full rather than just existing. My confidence has improved massively now being able to talk to new people and even taking holidays abroad with friends. I enjoy supporting the customers in using the online services and know that I make a difference to people that struggle with language barriers as well as IT. I have undertaken many courses with FCHO which have improved my personal and professional development. One in particular was the First Aid course as now I have vital skills should I need them."
Since she began volunteering at FCHO Mandy has gone on to paid employment in two different posts. She is also still a volunteer with us twice a week.
