Celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day at home

30/04/2020

“My dear friends, this is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the great British nation as a whole."

“Advance Britannia. Long live the cause of freedom.”

Sir Winston Churchill, 8 May 1945

On Friday 8 May 2020, the nation should have been coming together to celebrate the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe, and while plans may be cancelled and we can’t physically celebrate together, we can remember, reflect and commemorate our nation’s heroes from home.

We’ve worked with Citizen, the National Memorial Arboretum and the Royal British Legion to help you mark the anniversary with online activity packs for both children and adults.

The packs include homemade bunting stencils, recipes from the era, extracts from Sir Winston Churchill, lyrics to war songs and much more.

On the day

There’ll be a two minute silence observed by the nation at 11am and at 3pm, take part in a ‘Toast to the Heroes of WW2’, where everyone across Britain will stand up, raise a glass and say the following words: “To those who gave so much, we thank you”.

And finally, much like the ‘clap for carers’ which we all take part in at 8pm on Thursday nights, there’ll be a nationwide doorstep sing-a-long to wartime favourite ‘We’ll Meet Again’ after the Her Majesty the Queen’s address at 9pm, so make sure you’re ready to sing your heart out for our heroes who gave everything for us. Take a listen to Vera Lynn's beautiful voice singing the classic below.
