Business in the Community’s Give & Gain Day is a global day of employee volunteering and this is the third year FCHO has supported the event.
39 of our colleagues which supported volunteered 199 hours between them on the day; which supported 170 people - 92 of whom were FCHO customers. This was a borough wide digital event; which included activities such as helping people to keep safe online, employment skills, how to use FCHO’s online services and bidding for properties with My Move Oldham. Activities took place across the borough and with lots of different organisations taking part.
One of FCHO’s aims for Give & Gain Day was to encourage our customers to get more involved in their communities. Jessie Perrin (84) took her first steps into joining the online community by publishing her blog online. Jessie has always had a passion for writing which runs through her family. Her uncle – the Rev Stanley Finch – was a published writer, releasing several books of poems.
Through working with our partnership with various organisations that include Barclays, Regenda, Great Places, Mind and Remploy, feedback so far has been very positive. Colleagues have made some great suggestions for next year’s event and those customers who have completed the online survey have said there was good service from the team, the staff are very helpful, the day was fun and informative. To channel her love for writing and get connected online, it was suggested that Jessie could write a blog for the OL1 group website. OL1 is a community group for those in the BGreen area in central Oldham. Whilst publishing her blog with help from the rest of the group, Jessie was surprised that a quick search online found her uncle’s books were still available to buy. Jessie’s blog is all about community and getting involved and she said: “I was brought up to be social and to get involved. English was my best subject at school and I still enjoy it now. Sharing my memories and stories with others is something I could do all day long!” Jessie has many more stories to share and plans to publish more blogs in the future with the help of other members of the group.
You can read Jessie's blog on the OL1 group website.
It’s not just the community who got involved with Give & Gain Day, other local services that include Barclays, Regenda, Great Places, Mind and Remploy have contributed their efforts to Give & Gain Day. Feedback so far has been very positive. Colleagues have made some great suggestions for next year’s event and those customers who have completed the online survey have said there was good service from the team, the staff are very helpful, the day was fun and informative.
Customers can get help to get online on our Online Owls page.
